WHAT IS THIS ALL ABOUT?
Did you know before children finish first grade, they should be able to read all of the Dolch sight words? This list of 220 words, prepared by E.W. Dolch, generally make up from 50 to 75 percent of the reading material encountered by students. These words are generally known as DolchWords, high-frequency words, or “sight words”.
The lists represent frequency of use in books on different grade levels. For example, if is on the third grade list. This only means that E. W. Dolch found this word frequently in third grade books. He put words on the third grade list, which did not appear often in pre-primer through second grade books.
Confidence and reading ability improve when children know Dolch sight words. Many of these words are in almost anything they read. Readers will have more experiences of success if they know these words. Dolch words are service words, which are necessary for understanding sentences.

This program is great! Not only do my kids love the fact that they can shake the phone for the next word, but that the lady reads the words to them if they are having difficulty! Exceptional! Love the stars, report card & positive reinforcement! My three kids are competing against each other to see who can get the most words (user option - ingenious!) :) After trying a few others out there this one by far out does them all! Wonderful & enjoyable what more could a mama hope for?
I like the fact that this app includes all 220 Dolch sight words in one app. It beats having to download and pay for individual ones separately.
Also, I like the fact that I can have up to 4 individual users each with their own progress. The name in the main menu screen is a nice touch too.
This is a great educational app! My nieces love to compete against each other even when they arent together as you can enter their names & save the scores. They like the option of shaking the phone also. I like that this is a excellent collection of sight words & the words are on an elementary school paper graffic that looks like what the girls use in school. Well done!
I love it more with each update, but even more, I know my kids are learning each time they use it!
My five year old daughter knows some sight words but is resistant to flash card or trying to sound out words. I was a little concerned about one of the previous reviews but I downloaded the app anyway. I am glad I did, she loves it. She blew through the pre-primer and primer words and can’t wait to start the first grade words. She has no trouble working the controls or pushing the speak word button to hear how the word sounds. I think it is a great app for early readers.
Some bad moments
So, in the description of this "educational" toy, it never said how the kids tested themselves to see if they could read the word. I thought they could perhaps say the word into the phone and then advance to the next word, but no, they just have to say the word aloud or in their head, see if it matches what the "Speak Word" says, and then continue on by pressing "next word", or shaking the phone. Their is no way to know if your kid knows the words unless you "play" with them. Their report card (that "kids love") can be attained by quickly pushing the "next word" button 100 times without reading any of the words. I can see this app being useful for a motivated adult/ older ESL student, but it is not fun enough for a kid. There just is not enough positive feedback. Would be an OK free app. Definitely not worth the $2 I spent.
I bought this app for my 5 year old entering Kindergarten. I was very excited it had future sight words as he excels in school. HOWEVER, this app will only work for 1st grade and up. The app only offers the words without a recite of the words outloud. Hearing the word displayed helps with independent learning. I feel this shouldnt offer the pre-reading categories unless the APP offers an audio of the word. Im super sad I cant get my $1.99 back to use on a more effective App.
It is only a list of words, unlike the title that claims "see" and "hear" there is no sound. I cannot believe I paid for nothing more than a list of words.
You can get a Dolche List anywhere online. This is Not interactive. This does not teach! Its only a list.
Terrible, there are much better apps for free, dont waste your money.
Dont waste your money! Not able to add a user which means the app is USELESS! If you cant add a user, you cant play any games. Terrible!!!
